The battle of Pointe du Hoc

Pointe du Hoc is an important place to visit on the Normandy landing beaches. The Normandy invasion, also known as D-Day, was the Allied attempt to liberate occupied Europe from the Nazis during World War II.

The task of taking this heavily fortified cliff, called Pointe du Hoc, fell to the 2nd and 5th Ranger Battalions. The Germans had fortified the entire area, including this rocky promontory, which consisted of two parts: the cliff, about 30 meters high at its highest point, crowned with countless artillery breaks and defensive systems, plus a small mound, where numerous cannons, mortars and machine guns were stationed.

The Rangers’ mission was to destroy the massive Nazi coastal artillery sites that threatened the Allied forces landing on Omaha Beach. This World War II land action was illustrated in the movie “Saving Private Ryan”.

In a feat of strength and courage, a small group of young American Rangers climbed the steep cliffs of Pointe du Hoc. Under incredible fire and in daring displays of heroism, they reached and destroyed the German gun emplacements that threatened the Allied forces landing on the coast.

The city

This town near us is a seaside resort of about 600 inhabitants. It is historically recognized throughout the world, mainly due to the famous Allied landings . It has a number of tourist sites full of history. We have as an example:

Set up during the Second World War on the Normandy coast, it was used tosupply the Allies. Its construction prevented the Allies from docking in deep water. It was done with prefabricated caissons in England called Phoenix, still visible today, which allowed for what many consider a unique example of military engineering. He enjoyed an extraordinary traffic for his time. We are talking about 2.5 million men landed, 500,000 vehicles and 4 million tons of material. To achieve this, an impeccable design was implemented with docks, piers, floating lanes and many other important elements. This allowed him to be crucial in the achievement of the famous victory of this region. It is a magnificent site to discover at all costs.
